Spirits Canada welcomes Bill 24, the Alberta Whisky Act, a landmark step in growth for the Alberta whisky industry
Spirits Canada and its member companies welcome the Alberta Government’s tabling of Bill 24, the Alberta Whisky Act.
This first-of-its-kind legislation represents an important step forward in showcasing the exceptional quality of Alberta-made whiskies. By requiring Alberta Whisky to be produced using 100 per cent Alberta water and a defined proportion of grains sourced from local farms, the Act firmly interconnects the province’s rich agricultural foundation and distilling expertise, while supporting growth in tourism and hospitality as part of the province’s long-term plan.
“Our members’ facilities in Alberta have been producing world-class spirits for over 80 years,” said Cal Bricker, President and CEO of Spirits Canada. “This legislation will further strengthen their ability to tell a distinctly Alberta story that is rooted in quality, authenticity, and local pride.”
Spirits Canada’s members are uniquely well positioned to share Alberta’s distilling story with the world. They produce an estimated 70 per cent of the spirits made in Alberta and are the province’s largest spirits exporters, with more than half of their production shipped to international markets.
“For years, our members have been carrying the Alberta Whisky brand to customers around the world,” continued Bricker. “This Act will help elevate Alberta’s global reputation as a producer of premium spirits.”
Spirits Canada was pleased to provide input during consultations to government in the development of this initiative and looks forward to continued collaboration with the Government of Alberta to support the implementation of this Act and the growth of the province’s spirits sector.
