“The choice to cap the excise tax increase at 2% represents alignment on the recommendations that the combined voices of the beer, wine, spirits, restaurant, and hospitality sectors made,” said Cal Bricker, President & CEO of Spirits Canada.⁠

Since its introduction in 2017, the escalator tax, has subjected alcohol to automatic annual hikes based on changes in the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Initially introduced during a period of 1% to 1.5% inflation, the 2% cap by the federal government brings closer into line, the expectations of a normal inflationary environment. ⁠

As the upcoming federal budget draws near, Canadian citizens are poised to endure yet another blow to their routine purchases and limited financial resources. If the annual alcohol excise tax aligns with the 2023 Consumer Price Index (CPI) on April 1st, individuals will be burdened with an augmented tax of 4.7% on alcoholic beverages, far surpassing the government's current inflation objectives.⁠

Lorena Patterson, Senior Vice President of Spirits Canada participated as a panel speaker at the 2024 DISCUS Conference on Importing and Exporting South of the Border⁠

The panel brought together experts in the alcohol beverage industry from Canada and Mexico to delve into the opportunities and challenges of trading within the North American market. Among the topics discussed were strategies to increase market share in Canada and Mexico, the growing popularity of tequila in the United States, and the advantages and disadvantages of upcoming regulatory expectations. ⁠

Lorena, who has more than 25 years of experience in the energy sector in Mexico, is considered a leading expert in this field and is now applying her expertise (and her passion for mezcal and tequila!) to the spirits industry. ⁠
